Transport Links
Bedfordshire lies on many of the main transport routes that link London to the Midlands and Northern England.
Roads
Two of England's six main trunk roads pass through Bedfordshire:
- The A1 London to Edinburgh road runs close by Biggleswade and Sandy
- The A5 London to Holyhead road passes through Dunstable
In addition, the M1 motorway, which stretches as far north as Yorkshire, has three junctions within the county – one in Luton, one serving Bedford and another serving Milton Keynes.
Other major roads include the A6, which run directly through Bedford and Luton, making journeys between the two major towns very straightforward, and the A428 which links Bedford to Northamptonshire.
Railways
Bedfordshire has excellent rail links with three main lines operating through the county.
- The West Coast Main Line has one station at Leighton Buzzard and is served by London Midland trains to Euston and Northampton.
- The East Coast Main Line has stations at Arlesey, Biggleswade and Sandy, served by First Capital Connect services to King's Cross and Peterborough
- The Midland Main Line serves Luton and Bedford, with trains to many destinations operated by Midland Mainline and First Capital Connect.
All of the rail links provide excellent links to London, with a trip from Bedford to King’s Cross taking as little as 40 minutes.
There are also rural services running between Bedford and Bletchley along the Marston Vale Line.
Air
London Luton Airport has flights to many UK, European and North African destinations, operated by low-cost airlines including Easyjet.
