HISTORY OF POLICING IN BEDFORDSHIRE

The first professional Police Force in Bedfordshire was established in 1839, replacing a former system of elected parish constables. It then comprised 1 Chief Constable, 6 Superintendents and 40 Constables.

Luton was an independent borough force from 1876 to 1947 and then from 1964 to 1966. The force was then known as Bedfordshire and Luton Constabulary from 1966 to 1974 until becoming Bedfordshire Police, as it is now known.

Since 1840, Bedfordshire Police has had 13 Chief Constables.
